Why Local Control Matters
In 2024, Amazon shut down its Alexa Cloud Cam service and bricked every device. Philips briefly required cloud accounts for local light bulbs. Google discontinued Nest Secure and killed the companion app. Every 'smart' device that depends on a cloud is a device with an expiration date you don't control.
Home Assistant: The Local Brain
Home Assistant runs on a Raspberry Pi, an old laptop, or a Docker container. It discovers and controls thousands of devices locally — no internet required. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices connect via a $30 USB dongle. WiFi devices work locally if they support local APIs (Shelly, ESPHome, Tasmota). The automation engine is more powerful than anything Google or Amazon offers.

- Home Assistant Green ($99) or any Raspberry Pi 4+
- Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle ($30)
- Aqara Zigbee sensors — motion, door, temperature ($10-20 each)
- Ikea Tradfri or Philips Hue bulbs with Zigbee (no hub needed)
- Shelly relays for making dumb switches smart ($15 each)
Total cost for a fully local smart home: under $300. And it works when your internet doesn't.
